This Sunday's six comes from Duality, since y'all seem to be enjoying it so well. Hopefully you read the tab to get a sense of what's going on overall. In this snippet, our fearless (ok, scared to death) MC is about to undergo her first combat exam, the Endurance Chamber, in which she'll have to fight four different opponents in four simulated environments. She's not ready, but James wants her in it anyway. The test uses virtual reality to simulate the opponent's natural habitat. It is do or die.
Finally, the sands died down enough for me to open my eyes. On a small mound of sand only a few yards away stood a tiny fox-like creature.
A fennec? I asked myself. A fennec is going to kill me?
Great visual and love the suspense
ReplyDeleteI am so looking forward to reading the whole novel once it's pubbed!!!! I'm giving SSS a go (unofficially). Check mine out at www.frobertawalker.blogspot.com

ReplyDeleteGreat uses of the senses. Wasn't expecting a fennec. (Dunno what a fennec is, but expected something bigger and scarier than a small foxlike creature. Good build up. Good switcheroo!)
ReplyDeleteHow hilarious: my word verification word was "foxed."
Oooh I'm hoping for a fennec shape-shifter! Great six!
ReplyDeletewell, of course fennecs are lethal! What is she thinking? ;-)

As Jayel said, it really is the little critters you have to watch out for ;)
Nice job! I really enjoyed this - and I would love to see what happens next!
ReplyDeleteI'm there experiencing the sand, feeling the fear.
ReplyDeleteI'd be asking: How sharp are its teeth?
ReplyDeleteI can feel that stinging sand on my face. Well done. And her deadly opponent is...a cute little fox. Yeah, that would throw me off too, but I'm sure part of this test is to teach her never to prejudge a potential opponent. Great six!
ReplyDeleteAnother SF/R. Love it.
The setting is vivid, and the touch of humor sets it off nicely.
ReplyDeleteVery intriguing! I'll be back for more next week.
ReplyDeleteI'm echoing what others before me have said, but this is really intriguing!

ReplyDeleteI imagine the punch line is ... "Never underestimate a fennec!"
