This snippet occurs at the end of main character's break. She's expecting Jasper to return for her. She's *un*pleasantly surprised when he doesn't.

She stopped right in front of me, white coat gently rippling in the breeze, and bent down to look at me. I wanted to back away from her, like I had from others, but I was drawn to her. The sugary scent of a deep connection ransacked my brain and demanded images that my mind couldn’t conjure. She clasped the collar around my neck. She wanted to be distant and cold, like my animal nature tried to force me to be. I thought she’d make a much better panther.
