Paranormal Love Wednesday

Hey all! I'm participating in Paranormal Love Wednesday for the first time, and I thought it'd be a great time to share an exclusive excerpt from Ember's Secret. I didn't want to go too far into the book (even though there's a scene I LOOOOVE that I want to post lol). The excerpt still needs to make sense, I suppose.

Ember only wants two things out of life: to be reunited with her sisters, and to see people come back to her café. Catering to people she never sees again, she experiences a loneliness that can’t be filled. As one of the last Whakamanu—a descendant of the Maori bird-god Tane—she has to hold on to the secrets of her tribe. Family first.

Gourmet TV personality Austin Garten, host of the popular show Back Road Eats, needs more in his life than Breadbasket America grilling. He’s tired of the safe routes, the easy and dependable foods that the Network loves to display. When his RV breaks down in Wyoming, and he learns about Kai, a Maori restaurant outside of Casper, his interest is piqued. Once he meets the proprietor, he realizes he’s wants more than just her food. He wants her.

Ember isn’t too sure. The Solstice, the Maori New Year, is fast approaching, and with the heat in her kitchen ratcheting up, she knows she can’t keep her secret for much longer. But will Austin be able to accept her? Or will her secret drive them apart?

Cutting the criollo bread, Ember hummed the song she'd heard drifting from the basement. Papa hadn't left his workshop all night; before she left, she'd found him there, bottle in hand, and covered him with a blanket. She also made sure to leave a couple of aspirin and a glass of water by his chair. Fearing what she'd find when she returned, she hoped Austin would humor her by staying for a while.

She hadn't been lying when she said it took her half the night to figure out a menu. Too many possibilities to choose from led to too many debates with herself. She wanted to impress him. And maybe she needed some validation, too.

She placed the slices of criollo on the grill and started prepping the watercress. Fragrances danced all around her, swirling in the air and bringing her comfort. As she moved around the kitchen gathering ingredients for the Hollandaise, she wondered what would have happened if Mama hadn't died. Would they have stayed in New Zealand and tried to rebuild, or would they have left anyway? The hunters certainly wouldn't have left them alone—it'd been hard enough for her to find any of Mama's feathers to bring with them. Leaving had been the right decision, but would returning be so bad? Now that the entire Whakamanu tribe had been decimated, save for them, surely their old village would be safe? The hunters wouldn't think to return for them.

Before dressing the plates, she took a quick taste of the Hollandaise. Perfect. Maybe she should've made herself something. Eh, later.

The guys straightened when she returned. “Order up.”

As she set Austin's plate in front of him, she glimpsed the notepad next to his arm. “I like to take notes,” he said.

That made sense. “Must be hard to remember everything you eat on a trip.”

“Some things. Not everything.”

Face heating, she took a seat. Thank the gods they wouldn't be able to see her blush with her dark skin.

“So tell me about this. We've got….” He lifted the poached egg. “Lamb, homemade Hollandaise, a watercress garnish.”

“And homemade criollo bread. Grilled. Makes it kind of like a giant crostini.”

Taking notes, he nodded. “This from one of your mom's recipes?”

“Nope. All me.” Nerves threatened to overtake her. If he didn't take a bite soon, she'd scream. When he finally cut into it and took the first bite, she almost imploded with relief, and as he wolfed down the dish, he made these sounds that she wanted to hear in a more private setting. “Good?”

“Foodgamsic.” He chuckled. “I mean, yeah. It‟s…yeah.”

She shook her head. Five minutes. Five minutes alone with him…. “Would you like to see the kitchen?”

“Lead the way.”

If Papa knew what she was doing, he'd be pissed, but right now, she didn't care. He never came to the restaurant, and he certainly never wanted to learn about this aspect of her life. Austin did. Though she barely knew him, she would gladly share all of herself with him. She'd already shared her soul.

Kathleen Bosman Blog tour

Incredibly happy to host my DP sister Kathleen Bosman! All yours!

***

This is the seventh stop of my blog tour. Thank you so much to Cate Peace for hosting me on her blog. I’m giving away a $10 Amazon gift card and 5 bags of swag with some South African flavour treats.

Parts of my story that I’ve never blogged about before are some interesting things about my hero, Ryan. Ryan, like Tessa, is in a creative career – hence Dragonfly Moments being Book 1 of The Creators Series. He’s a chef. Ryan has a passion for food. He was a bit of a rootless fellow before he found his passion which I imagine many people are.

Writing about a chef was a challenge for me as I’m just a home cook and know very little about cooking professionally. I had to do some research and my wonderful editor, Zee Monodee, who had knowledge on “foodie” writing, helped me immensely. I’m grateful to her for her expertise.

I think the greatest treat that Ryan cooked up was what he served Tessa at the dragonfly picnic. It wasn’t so much the food, but the thought he put into showing Tessa what her heart really needed. I’m not going to tell you too much, but I think Ryan is an amazing hero. Even though Tessa gave him many reasons to give up on her, he never stopped trying to show her the real path for her life. His patience and kindness was so romantic.

I’m going to quote something from one of my favourite reviews from Sarah Says Read Romance:

She quoted a part of my book:
“I want to give you memories. Dragonfly moments. We have these moments in life that we never forget. They’re short, but they impact us forever. I wanted to give you one of those moments.”
This paragraph had me sobbing because it was so romantic and so sweet. Why can't guys be this romantic?

Blurb:

Seven years earlier, a young and serious Tessa Calitz wrote a letter to free spirit Ryan le Roux promising her undying love. As time passed she forgot about that letter...but Ryan did not.

When he walks back into her life, Tessa is in a relationship and busy setting up her art gallery in Johannesburg. She has plans to start a family, and the arrival of Ryan throws her for a spin. He is the worst thing that could happen to her dream of stability...or is he?

When everything she clung to starts to crumble, Ryan is right beside her to inspire her to greater things. But her compulsion for having marriage and children on her terms alone pushes Ryan away--until she falls in love with an orphaned baby.

What can Ryan do to make Tessa realize that being with him is what her heart has longed for all along?

Excerpt:

“You’re making a mistake, Ryan. Coming in here and trying to bring up the past. It’s too late now. I’m committed to Mark and have found a life for myself. You never wanted me then. You loved Annie.”
“I didn’t love her. I loved you. And you promised forever….”
His voice was resigned, and then he winked at her as if to dispel the tension. It did no such thing.
The letter at the back of the sketch had promised she would love him forever, hadn’t it? She had believed she would never love anyone as much as Ryan and that he showed her what true love was.
“You never loved me.” She dropped her gaze onto her lap. “We were just good friends.”
Pushing up her chin to pretend that her heart wasn’t zinging with emotion, she started to walk toward the one wall to adjust a painting. He grabbed her hand. She tried to pull away, but he firmly pulled her close.
Heat and energy radiated off him and his manly scent encompassed her. Even his breath was a sweetness she wanted to drink in. She took in the shape of his face, his mouth which drooped slightly to the left, his skewed jaw line and the prominent cheek bones. His eyebrows were dark and perfectly shaped, and he had such long eyelashes. Yanking her burning hand away, she made sure her back was facing him.
“I was blind to the true treasure. All the time when I was going out with Annie, I really wanted you, but I couldn’t do that to her—dump her for her best friend. I’ve loved you for years, Tess. I’ve been trying to find you. No other woman has measured up, and I’ve had several relationships. And you’ve become so beautiful.”
She faced him, her mouth partially open, devoid of words. He’d loved her? Why didn’t he tell her then before it was too late?
His gaze followed her from head to foot, and heat branded her face while a spark ignited her body.
“But I wasn’t then. You thought I was ugly. You must have because Annie was so beautiful and you never looked at me.”
“I did. Besides the kohl and black clothes, you were adorable, especially in your pajamas.”
Tessa wasn’t usually one to blush easily, but fire lapped up her whole face and neck. “But the way you used to look at Annie. She had the most stunning legs. Long and muscular.”
Ryan smiled. “You have better legs than Annie.”
She pulled back. For a moment, he had her in a trance. Maybe she should leave Mark and pursue this. Jump right in. No, of course not. Who was Ryan now, anyway? She hardly knew him. He could disappear again. Mark cared for her and he was the perfect match to build a family. That’s all she needed.

Author Bio

Kathy loved reading and writing from early childhood, but her dream to write books was put aside until her kids were small, and she had little mental stimulation. The writing became a passion as well as her love for romance. She hasn’t looked back since writing her first romance novel in 2007. She homeschools her three children so in between deciphering algebraic problems for her teenage son (with little success), conducting science experiments, and tackling piles of laundry and dishes, she miraculously finds time to write books and read many others for fun.

In which I share something personal.

I've been working on a foodie romance lately, presumably for Decadent Publishing's line. It started out as a means by which I could get my crush on Chef Scott Conant out of my system, but it's evolved into more than that.

Let me give you a little history.

I thought this would be a fun genre to try my hand at, since I don't do a lot of contemporary work. It started as a fun little romp between two chefs that begins at a Chopped-style competition that benefits a charity. (If you're not familiar with the Food Network show [it's their #1 show] then you should watch an episode. It's great.) Since Scott was competing for charity in a celebrity version of Chopped, I decided to make a fictionalized version of that charity, Keep Memory Alive, for my story.

It just so happens that KMA is a charity that benefits research and treatment for Alzheimer's and other brain diseases. And it just so happens that my family has been affected by dementia and Alzheimer's very recently. So this story suddenly became very close to my heart.

I made the conscious decision for my main character's mother to exhibit the beginning warning signs of dementia. This wasn't an easy one, but as the story started unfolding, I realized it needed to be in there. Knowing what my cousins have gone through in caring for my great-aunt and how difficult it's been for them, I feel like...I don't know what I feel like. But considering all the stupid diseases that run in my family, I'm most terrified by the one that could rob me of my memories and cognition.

So I made another conscious decision. Should this get published (and if it doesn't get picked up, I'm gonna pub it myself), I'm going to donate at least half of whatever I get for it to Keep Memory Alive. It's an amazing charity, and the work it does is incredibly important. Please do not do the pat on the back thing. This is important to me, and I felt like it needed to be shared, not because I think I'm awesome (I don't), but because I think it's important that, as writers and authors, we do our best to shine some light on some unpleasant corners and try to make a difference.
